Chapter 11: Diagnosing Tangled Situations
Drafted for Aryeh's edit.
For chapter 11: Diagnosing Tangled Situations
Timing
Section titled “Timing”- Reading the chapter: about 11 minutes, its 1,580 words of prose at 150 words a minute. Not counted in those minutes: 6 figures, 1 pair, 3 understanding checks, the reading exercise and the exercises.
- A session: 45 minutes, the exercises set for it. (estimate)
- Afterwards: 105 minutes, the exercises set for then. (estimate)
Common misreadings
Section titled “Common misreadings”- One archetype forced where two couple. In the bad diagram, the birthday parties are declared escalation alone, and the limit on guests closes no loop; the lab’s check finds 1 declared archetype. Brief: at least 2, coupled through a shared variable. Two coupled archetypes are in the briefs of AR 10 and CS 11.
- Escalation and eroding goals expected to differ in their loops. They share one shape: the lab lists a match of one with Also reads as the other, and only the declaration records the story. In the understanding check about street musicians, Either: the loops match both, so both declarations are equally right is a wrong choice; in the chapter’s Common misreading, the parties’ B1 and B2 also match eroding goals.
- The gap taken for the target. In the reading’s first question, Staffing need, lowered by community care is a wrong choice: the need is the gap, and the staffing goal is the target that falls. In AR 08’s self-check, the gap is a variable of its own.
- Corrective action pushed harder while the target can still fall. In the reading’s third question, Provider recruitment, pushed harder is a wrong choice; Kim finds targets set from outside drift less.
- Leverage ranked by a mark. In the understanding check about a pottery studio, A heavier box around the waiting list is a wrong choice; in AR 10’s self-check, the leverage points are ranked in a list beside the diagram.
Exercises to set
Section titled “Exercises to set”The session goes from an arms race and a target that moves toward what was done, one shape read as two stories, to a published staffing goal, AR 08 before AR 07 so the session holds both stories; underinvestment, partners in each other’s way, two coupled archetypes and the case come afterwards.
For a session
- AR 06 · An arms race between two neighboring countries, 15 minutes (estimate)
- AR 08 · Knee exercises after an operation, 15 minutes (estimate)
- Reading · The VA’s staffing goal, redrawn, 15 minutes (estimate)
Afterwards
- AR 07 · A country's railways, 20 minutes (estimate)
- AR 09 · Two parents sharing care after a separation, 25 minutes (estimate)
- AR 10 · A coastal town and its sea walls, 30 minutes (estimate)
- CS 11 · Kelsham Primary School: the town school's pull and its rising class size, 30 minutes (estimate)
