Timing
Section titled “Timing”- Reading the chapter: about 12 minutes, its 1,844 words of prose at 150 words a minute. Not counted in those minutes: 7 figures, 1 pair, 3 understanding checks, the reading exercise and the exercises.
- A session: 50 minutes, the exercises set for it. (estimate)
- Afterwards: 65 minutes, the exercises set for then. (estimate)
Common misreadings
Section titled “Common misreadings”- A match taken as a verdict on the situation, not a hypothesis about the loops. In the understanding check about a basketball court, That players stop coming because of the waiting and That a second court is where to act are wrong choices for what a match of limits to growth shows.
- A match read with its delay missing. In the bad diagram, the rice valley’s loops carry no delay on natural predators → pests, and the lab’s check finds fixes that fail without its delay. In the reading’s third question, a delay on activity spaces on the outskirts → lack of adolescent physical activity sits on the symptomatic solution’s effect, where shifting the burden’s delay is the fundamental solution’s.
- Effects compared one by one with the template’s. In the understanding check about a gym floor, No: the archetype has performance → limiting action +, and this effect is − misses a variable named as its opposite: matching reads loop kinds.
- A side effect written on the symptom it brings back, or read as outside the loops. In AR 03’s self-check, the side effect is the reliance the hired guides build up, not a second shortage of leaders; in the reading’s second question, Nothing in the loops: a side effect sits outside them is a wrong choice.
- Fixes that fail looked for in two balancing loops. In the reading’s first question, B1 and B2 is a wrong choice: fixes that fail has a reinforcing loop.
Exercises to set
Section titled “Exercises to set”The session goes from a relief that brings its problem back and growth held back, through a published diagram, to a quick relief that holds back a slower one; a split that widens a lead, a shared fishing ground and the case come afterwards.
For a session
- AR 01 · Watering a lawn a little every evening, 10 minutes (estimate)
- AR 02 · Electric cars and public chargers, 10 minutes (estimate)
- Reading · Activity spaces on Amsterdam’s outskirts, redrawn, 15 minutes (estimate)
- AR 03 · A climbing club that hires guides for its trips, 15 minutes (estimate)
Afterwards
- AR 04 · Two parks and one maintenance budget, 15 minutes (estimate)
- AR 05 · Three countries' fleets on one fishing ground, 25 minutes (estimate)
- CS 10 · Kelsham Primary School: merging classes to balance the budget, 25 minutes (estimate)
